Honkers End Season with Sweep of Rox
August 12, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers picked up the victory in the final game of the 2012 Northwoods League season by defeating the St. Cloud Rox 6-0 at Mayo Field in Rochester, MN.
Third baseman Reid Roper (Illinois) delivered the big blow for the Honkers with a three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the seventh to cap a five-run inning. The blast added a little breathing room to the 1-0 Rochester lead through the first six innings.
The Honkers started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the opening frame on an RBI groundout from the bat of first baseman Chris Manning (Doane) to score second baseman Justin Protacio (Kansas), who reached on a leadoff single.
Honkers starter Kevin Johnson (Illinois) was in dominant form, allowing just two hits over 5.0 innings of shutout baseball. With the victory, Johnson has picked up a win in his last three starts to improve his record to an even 3-3 in 2012.
Right-hander Jordan Millbrath (Augustana) tossed the final 4.0 innings in relief of Johnson and did not allow a run to preserve the shutout and earn his third save of the summer for Rochester.
Right fielder Ben Lahn (Lamar CC) went 0-4 but had a pair of crowd-pleasing outfield assists to gun down a couple of runners trying to advance to third base. Shortstop Mike Lukkason (Dakota Wesleyan) finished the game 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Left fielder Justin Parr (Illinois) went 1 for 3 to end the season in the midst of a 24-game hitting streak.
With the win, the Honkers sweep the two-game set and finish the season with an overall record of 29-41. The team went 15-20 in the first half and compiled a 14-21 record for the second half.
In other Northwoods League news, the La Crosse Loggers lost to the Green Bay Bullfrogs 12-3 to fall one game shy of the 2006 Honkers' NWL record for wins in a season. The '06 Honkers finished that year 50-17 to set the mark.
