LA CROSSE, WI - Matt Chapman's third inning grand slam was the difference, as the La Crosse Loggers defeated the Battle Creek Bombers 4-1 in the series opener at Copeland Park.

The Bombers took an early lead in the second, as Sikes Orvis and Connor Costello led off with singles, executed a double steal, and Orvis came around to score on a wild pitch.

In the third, Bombers starter Cole Swanson walked the bases loaded before giving up a grand slam on the first pitch he threw to Chapman with two outs in the inning. It was the first of just two hits off Swanson, who lasted five and two thirds and took the loss. The Loggers had only three hits total on the night, but Chapman's one swing was all they needed.

Josh Frye was dominant in just his first start and second appearance for La Crosse. The big 6-7 right hander from Long Beach State struck out ten and did not walk a man over his six innings of work, allowing just three hits and one run.

The two teams will face off again on Friday night in game two of the three game set. Kyle Teague will be on the hill for the Bombers. First pitch is 8:05 E.T.
