Belleville Senators News Release

The Belleville Senators clung on for a 2-1 win over the Laval Rocket Wednesday night at Place Bell.

Belleville had goals from Drake Batherson and Chase Balisy while Filip Gustavsson made 34 saves. Laval's Charlie Lindgren stopped 16 shots while Jake Evans scored their lone goal.

Belleville led 2-0 heading into the third period but were quickly pegged back by Evans as he grabbed his second of the season as he used a screen to sneak a shot from the right faceoff circle past Gustavsson.

The Rocket continued to dominate the period and were robbed of an equalizer as Gustavsson slid across the crease to make a phenomenal save to deny Nikita Jevpalovs with a little over eight minutes left in the frame.

Gustavsson continued to stand on his head for the Senators as they hung on for a 2-1 victory despite failing to register a single shot on goal in the third period.

After a quiet opening, the Sens struck first through Batherson's fourth of the year as he wired a one-timer past Lindgren after Julius Bergman fed him in the slot after taking a bank pass off the boards.

The Sens searched for a second goal, and came close on the power play through Adam Tambellini, who twice had one-timers turned away by Lindgren as Belleville took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Belleville did double its lead at 8:53 of the second as Balisy was able to bury Paul Carey's outstanding backhand pass from behind the net for his fourth of the year to make it 2-0. Laval thought they had a fast reply through Michael McCarron as the red light went on but the referee immediately waved it off to preserve the Sens' two-goal lead.

Senators defenceman Bergman played in his 200th career AHL game tonight.

Belleville is back in action Friday as they will face the Syracuse Crunch in a back-to-back. The Senators are home Nov. 9 when they host the Toronto Marlies. Tickets are available.
