P-Bruins Week in Review

After starting the season by taking only three of a possible ten points in the standings, things have started to turn around a bit for the Providence Bruins. They have taken five of a possible eight points over the last four games, including two this weekend in their most lopsided victory of the season. Overall, the team sits in eighth place in the Atlantic Division at 3-5-1-0 with seven points on the young season.

Weekend Recap

The P-Bruins showed good fight on Saturday night in Springfield, but ultimately fell to a Thunderbird team that has yet to lose in regulation. After falling behind twice, goals from Martin Bakos (his first North American goal) and Jan Kovar tied things up 2-2 late in the third period. However, a pair of late Springfield goals led them to a 4-2 win. Providence returned home for their ninth annual "Pink in the Rink" night Sunday, and they excited a packed Dunkin Donuts Center crowd with their most dominant win of the season. Zach Senyshyn needed only 1:40 to score the opening goal of the game and Trent Frederic followed suit by scoring with five minutes left to give the P-Bruins a 2-0 lead after one. Cameron Hughes took over the second period from there, needing just a total of 9:04 to net the first hat-trick of his career. Senyshyn added another goal late in the period as Providence went on to a 6-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Hats off to Hughes

Cameron Hughes notched his first career hat-trick Sunday, becoming the first Providence rookie to score three goals in one game since Frank Vatrano in 2016. His final goal came in exciting fashion, earning a penalty shot to post the first P-Bruin hat-trick of the season. It was the first time Providence was awarded a penalty shot since March 31, 2017, when Sean Kuraly scored against the Albany Devils. With four points in the game, he doubled his season point total and now ranks second on the team in scoring with eight points in nine games.

Notable Performers

Colby Cave, Anton Blidh, Cody Goloubef and Kovar scored at least one point in each of team's two games this weekend. Cave continues to lead the team in scoring with five goals and five assists for ten points. He has scored in seven straight games for the first time in his AHL career, a total that matches the team's longest point streak from last season. Dan Vladar posted his best start of the season Sunday, stopping all but one of the 29 shots he faced. Among rookie goaltenders, Vladar has played the most minutes and stopped the second most shots in the AHL.

The P-Bruins penalty kill has been great all season long, ranking first in the AHL in kill percentage. Providence has killed off 93.9% of their penalties, allowing just two power play goals in nine games while adding a shorthanded goal from Austin Fyten. Cave and Blidh have been the team's top penalty killing forwards all season, while this weekend Chris Breen, Cody Goloubef and Connor Clifton saw most of the minutes on the blueline. Overall, the team was a perfect 9-9 on the penalty kill this weekend and have successfully stopped their opponents' last 18 power plays.

Roster Notes

Injuries on Boston's blueline led to another Providence defenseman needing to be recalled for their NHL debut. Last week it was Urho Vaakanainen, and this week it was Jeremy Lauzon getting the call. Lauzon has played in three NHL games after earning a promotion October 25, averaging 12 minutes of ice time on their bottom pairing. Lauzon added scoring to his physical style of play early for Providence, scoring four points in six games to get Boston's attention. Cave also earned an emergency call-up October 29, but was sent back to the AHL the next day before ever appearing in a game.

What's Ahead

The P-Bruins open November with a two-game road trip to Charlotte. The team takes on the Checkers at the Bojangles' Coliseum Friday night at 7pm and will face-off with them again Saturday night at 6pm.
