Sens Beaten by Marlies in Final Game Before Break

The Belleville Senators fell 7-3 to the Toronto Marlies in its final game before the Holiday break.

Belleville's Filip Gustavsson made 11 saves while Joey Daccord turned aside five shots in the third period. Josh Norris, Drake Batherson and Filip Chlapik had Belleville's goals. Toronto's Joseph Woll stopped 28 shots as Pontus Aberg, Darren Archibald, Timothy Liljegren, Nic Petan, Kenny Agostino, Hudson Elynuik and Mason Marchment scored.

Belleville fell behind just 26 seconds in as Aberg beat Gustavsson over his left shoulder from the goal line but the Senators found its tying goal through Norris as on a rush he tried to center to a streaking Hubert Labrie but Nic Petan's stick wound up deflecting the puck in at 7:31.

The Sens had its first lead as Batherson buried his 12th of the year at 13:03 as he blew through two Marlies defenceman before firing past Woll to make it 2-1.

It took just 2:31 of the second period for it to become a 3-1 Belleville lead as Chlapik grabbed his third of the year. Veronneau flew down the right wing before centering where the puck hit the heel of Rudolfs Balcers stick before falling to Chlapik who beat Woll low blocker side.

Former Sens forward Archibald grabbed his seventh of the year on a quick snap at 7:20 to cut the Belleville lead to 3-2 before Liljegren scored on a 5-on-3 as he tied the game after Gustavsson's initial pad save jumped out to the Marlies defenceman.

25 seconds later, Toronto led through Petan's third of the year as he beat Gustavsson five-hole at 13:39.

Toronto pushed its lead to 5-3 1:52 into the third as with Daccord now in goal, Agostino beat him high as the rookie netminder went for a poke-check in-close before Elynuik got on the scoreboard with his second of the year at 6:25.

Marchment scored his second of the year with 3:41 to play on a penalty shot after he had been hooked by Jack Dougherty to push Toronto's lead to 7-3.

Balcers extended his franchise best point streak to 15 games while Trent Bourque recorded his first career AHL point with an assist on Batherson's goal.

The Sens will take a few days off for the Christmas break but return on Boxing Day for the annual game in Toronto. The Sens are back home Dec. 28 against Syracuse on Star Wars night. Tickets are available.
