San Antonio Rampage News Release

SAN ANTONIO (January 29, 2009) - Rampage captain Jeff Hoggan returned to the lineup scoring his team leading 18th goal, but Derek Smith's power-play goal was the difference as Binghamton made their first trip to the Alamo City a successful one with a 2-1 win Thursday night at the AT&T Center.

Binghamton scored at 5:09 of the first when Marc Cavosie sent the puck from the left wall to Derek Couture behind the net and got the return feed across the crease for a backdoor score and 1-0 Senators' advantage.

The Rampage, only 2-20 when giving up the first goal, made things tougher when Derek Smith sent a wrister high stick side from the left circle past Rampage goalie Josh Tordjman for a power-play goal and 2-0 Binghamton lead with 2:37 remaining in the first period.

The Senators entered the game ranked first in the AHL with a 23.5 % conversion rate on the man advantage and a league leading 53 power-play goals.

Down 2-0 through a frame, San Antonio cut the deficit in half when Hoggan beat Binghamton's Martin Gerber. Hoggan's shot from the top of the left circle skipped over the outstretched leg of Gerber, who was recently waived by parent club Ottawa, at 5:40 of the second period.

Gerber, who helped Carolina win the 2006 Stanley Cup, was assigned to Binghamton on January 27th after going unclaimed with his 3.7 million dollar salary.

San Antonio, just 1-20 when trailing after the second period, outshot the Senators 19-5 in the third but the 34-year-old veteran was up to task for the Senators. The Rampage head to New York and face Binghamton on February 4th during the rodeo road trip.

Including tonight, the Rampage are playing three games in three days and host division rival Quad City on Friday. The Flames come in fresh off a 5-0 shutout win in Houston.

After Quad City, it will be 29 days until the Rampage skate on home ice as their rodeo road trip begins in Worcester on Saturday. The 13-game road trip takes place over 25 days in 12 different cities, eight states and spans 6,526 miles.

Friday is also a KISS Rocks $1 Drink Night with $1 draft beers and fountain sodas when the Flames and Rampage do battle in a West Division showdown. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
