Houston Aeros News Release
HOUSTON, Texas - The Quad City Flames extended their winning-streak over the Houston Aeros to three games with a 5-0 win at Toyota Center Thursday night. Houston (21-19-1-7) hosts the Binghamton Senators Friday night which will be aired on both 1070-AM KNTH and on Fox Sports Houston as part of Friday Night Ice. The 7:35 p.m. game is also Mullet Night where the first 3,000 fans inside Toyota Center will receive their mullets.
The Flames struck first on Kris Chucko's first of two goals on the evening. He streaked in from the right wing and lifted a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle that went short side over the shoulder of Aeros' goaltender Barry Brust. The goal came at the 12:04 mark of the opening period and Kyle Greentree earned the lone assist on the play. The Aeros were forced to kill a five-on-three power play at the end of the period that carried over into the second, however Houston was still able to outshoot the Flames 6-5 in the period.
Houston killed the remainder of the five-on-three penalty in the beginning of the second period, but Chucko scored his second of the game minutes later on an even-strength goal at the 4:22 mark. He was again assisted by Greentree and Jamie Lundmark had the second helper. The Flames took a 3-0 lead on Lundmark's 12th goal of the season when he buried a rebound off the stick of Brett Sutter at 7:27 in the period. Two Flames were whistled for penalties midway through the second period, but the Aeros were unable to convert on the two-man advantage and the score remained 3-0 through two periods.
Flames' defenseman Brett Palin was whistled for roughing at the end of the second period giving the Aeros a full two-minute power play to start the third period. Houston couldn't convert on the man advantage and the Flames quickly added to their lead just 20 seconds later. Greentree lit the lamp for the first time in the game and marked his third point of the game at the 2:20 mark of the final period. Houston's streak of 18 straight penalty kills against the Flames, dating back to last season, came to an end at 11:58 of the period when Adam Cracknell netted a power-play marker for a 5-0 lead that would stand for the Aeros' largest margin of defeat this season.
Notes: - The Aeros had killed 14 straight penalties against the Flames this season and 18 dating back to last season before giving up the third period power-play marker to Adam Cracknell. - The Aeros were shutout for the fourth time this season and first since a 4-0 loss at Binghamton on January 2nd, the team Houston hosts Friday night. - The 5-0 loss also marked the largest margin of defeat for the Aeros this season. - Houston has allowed five or more goals nine times this season for a record of 1-8-0-0. The lone win came in a 8-6 victory over San Antonio, setting a club record for most combined goals in a game. - Out of 12 periods of play against the Quad City Flames the Aeros have only out shot the club in two of them, including tonight's first period when Houston out shot the club 6-5.
