May 1, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
Friday night the Senators had to gut it out, but gut it out they did in beating the Reading Phillies 4-2. With the win the Senators snap their 12-game losing streak and moved to 3-16 on the season. The second place Reading Phillies fell to 12-7.
Luis Atilano started and picked up the win for the Senators, improving to 1-3 on the season. He pitched effectively into the sixth inning before turning things over to Zack Segovia.
Jhonatan Solano delivered a bases-loaded two-run single to give the Sens a 1-0 lead in the second. Matt Whitney hit his third home run in four days in the third inning giving the Senators a 3-0 lead. Solano had three hits in the ballgame and Edgardo Baez chipped in with two. Harrisburg had a couple of other scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize until late in the game.
Reading scored their two runs in the sixth inning after there were two outs. Atilano retired the first two hitters, then gave up three straight singles before departing. Segovia came on and gave up two hits before striking out Quintin Berry to end the inning. Segovia pitched a solid seventh followed by Matt Avery who pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
The Senators tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk issued to pinch hitter Jemel Spearman.
In the ninth, Zech Zinicola came on and retired the side in order in earning his second save on the season.
Game two of the three game series is Saturday night with RH Adrian Alaniz making his second start for the Senators.
