
New Britain tops Trenton 9-7

(New Britain, CT)- New Britain scored eight unanswered runs, pounded out 17 hits, and defeated Trenton 9-7 on Friday night from New Britain Stadium. Trenton has now dropped three straight games, and five of six. The 17 hits allowed by the Thunder pitching staff is a season-high.
With the game tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, New Britain (9-11) plated two runs to take a 5-3 lead off of Thunder Reliever Michael Dunn (1-2). First Baseman Whit Robbins started the frame with a single, and advanced to third on a double by Catcher Wilson Ramos. Later in the inning, New Britain Second Brian Dinkleman singled home Robbins and Ramos to put New Britain in front 5-3. The Rock Cats added four more runs in the seventh inning. Ramos and Designated Hitter Erik Lis each had RBI singles, and Dinkleman connected on a two-run single. The Rock Cats had six hits in the four-run seventh inning. It was the most hits the Thunder have allowed in an inning this season.
Trenton (9-10) jumped out to a 3-1 lead. The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With Thunder Shortstop Eduardo Nunez at second base, Second baseman Reegie Corona dropped a bunt down the third base line. New Britain Third Danny Valencia charged the bunt and threw wide of the first base for an error. Nunez scored from second base, and Corona advanced to second base on the bunt single and error. The Thunder took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a solo home run by First baseman Jorge Vazquez. Nunez drove home a run with an RBI infield single in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 3-1. Thunder Outfielder Seth Fortenberry went 3 x 4 with a double, run, and an RBI. Nunez finished 3 x 4 with a run, two RBI, and a stolen base.
Down 9-3, Trenton scored two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth inning. Right fielder James Cooper was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run in the eighth, and Nunez had a sacrifice fly RBI. In the ninth inning, Catcher Francisco Cervelli and Fortenbery had back-to-back RBI singles with two outs.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope got a no-decision. He allowed six hits and three runs over five innings. New Britain Starting Pitcher Matthew Fox also received a no-decision. He yielded seven hits and three runs (two earned) over 5 1/3 innings. New Britain Reliever Jose Lugo (1-1) earned the victory in relief. He pitched two inings and allowed two hits and two runs.
Trenton and New Britain play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday night. RHP Alan Horne (0-0) will make his season debut for the Thunder against New Britain RHP Jeff Manship (1-2, 6.63). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
