Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders(10-11) returned home after eight days on the road but couldn't carry the momentum with them into game one versus Portland (10-10) as Connecticut fell 7-3 at Dodd Stadium Friday night in front of 2,740 fans.
The Sea Dogs delivered six hits, took advantage of an error and plated six runs in the top of the second inning to cruise to a game one victory.
Defenders starter, RHP-Brooks McNiven (0-1) made his fifth start of the year and looked to lock down his first win of the season but the Sea Dogs had other intentions. Portland rattled McNiven for seven runs, six earned off of seven hits, walked once in just four innings of work.
On the other side of the diamond, Sea Dogs starter, RHP-Junichi Tazawa (2-2) was in search of the answer to the Connecticut offense as his only two losses of the year has come at the hands of the Defenders. Friday night was different as Tazawa tossed a two hitter over five innings while allowing a lone run, walked two and fanned six en route to his second win of the year.
Connecticut's offense never got started but in the sixth inning RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve reached on a 3B-Jorge Jimenez throwing error and LF-Bobby Felmy blasted his second homer of the year to 1B-Brett Pill's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Saturday's game two matchup features the lefty in Jesse English (1-2) hurling for Connecticut versus righty Blake Maxwell (0-0) for Portland. Catch all the action starting with the Pre-game Show at 6:20pm on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310AM or online at ctdefenders.com.
The Defenders will have a Giants Pin Giveaway along with a Breast Cancer Awareness Silent Jersey Auction all weekend long as the team will be wearing special pink jerseys in the series versus Portland.
