Senators Claim Round One of Three-Game Set with Admirals

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Danny Bois, Zack Smith and Denis Hamel each scored twice as the Binghamton Senators claimed the first round of a three-game set against the Norfolk Admirals by a 6-3 score on Wednesday night at The Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena. The teams will meet again on Friday and Saturday nights at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The first period began well for the Admirals (21-26-3-5), as they took eight of the game's first ten shots and found the back of the net with two of them. Brandon Segal stretched his goal-scoring streak to four games with a power play goal 4:13 into the game. Mike Lundin sent a pass from the right faceoff dot to Segal in the slot, and Segal sent a shot into the corner of the net over the right shoulder of Binghamton backstop Martin Gerber.
Norfolk's lead grew to 2-0 just over a minute later. Juraj Simek sent a snap shot from the bottom of the left circle that Gerber blocked. Bracken Kearns found the rebound in the crease and stashed it into the net for his twelfth goal of the season at 5:58.
However, the Senators (29-18-5-3) bounced back to tie the score at 2-2 with a pair of goals by Zack Smith in the final 17 seconds of the period. Smith made it 2-1 when he found a rebound at the bottom edge of the right circle and fired it past Norfolk netminder Craig Kowalski at 19:43. Smith then finished off a two-on-one play with Marc Cavosie with a forehand wrist shot that beat Kowalski five-hole with less than one second remaining in the period.
Norfolk re-claimed the lead 5:44 into the second stanza. Blair Jones fended off a Binghamton defenseman behind the goal line before centering a pass to Pete Zingoni in the slot. Zingoni sent a shot over the left shoulder of Gerber for his second goal of the season.
However, Binghamton captain Denis Hamel leveled the score at three goals apiece less than two minutes later. Hamel sent a slap shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off Kowalski's stick and into the net at 7:11.
The Senators took the lead for the first time in the game just 1:24 into the final frame. Mattias Karlsson sent a shot from the left point that deflected off the skate of Danny Bois and into the net.
Binghamton's lead doubled with another goal by Bois while the teams skated four-on-four at 12:27. Bois entered the attacking zone along the left wing and sent a wrist shot from the faceoff dot that eluded the glove of Kowalski to give the hosts a 5-3 lead.
Hamel netted a shorthanded, empty-net goal at 19:38 to close out scoring in Binghamton's 6-3 win.
Craig Kowalski (33 shots, 28 saves) got the loss. Martin Gerber (43 shots, 40 saves) earned the victory.
Norfolk was 1-8 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-5.
The Admirals and Senators will now head to Norfolk to face off again on Friday and Saturday at Scope. On Friday night, the team will induct Mark Bernard and Victor Gervais into the Admirals Hall of Fame, presented by the Virginian-Pilot.
