Tough Guys Really do Wear Pink at Iowa Chops Pink in the Rink Night

February 18, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

Des Moines, Iowa (February 18, 2009) - On Friday, February 27 at 7:05 p.m., pink becomes the new black... at least at Wells Fargo Arena. The Iowa Chops will play the reigning Calder Cup champion the Chicago Wolves on pink ice during the second annual Pink in the Rink event. Proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Care Coordinator program at John Stoddard Cancer Center.

Everything that can be pink will be pink in the arena that night. Besides playing on pink ice, the Iowa Chops players will don special jerseys, available for purchase via live auction immediately following the game. There will also be a special pink lighting ceremony during the game to celebrate the lives of thousands of cancer survivors, as well as the lives of those lost to cancer. Even the arena will go pink, with pink lights outside, to reflect the excitement and energy of the night.

Iowa Chops President Steve Nitzel says that the attendance goal for the game is 15,000 spectators, which would shatter the current attendance record for a hockey game at the Wells Fargo Arena. Fans are invited to show their support for cancer research and this event in several ways. During the games preceding Pink in the Rink, fans can place spare change in jars designated to each rookie. The rookie receiving the most change will have to dye his hair pink for the February 27 game, and contributions made to the winning rookie jar will be matched by the Chops veteran players.

Fans can also purchase a Pink in the Rink t-shirt to wear for the evening. Shirts will be available for purchase at the game as well (size and style may be limited). Proceeds from t-shirt sales as well as crowd participation games, such as Pitch-a-Pig, will be part of the overall donation.

Last year's inaugural Pink in the Rink event generated over $25,000 for the Stoddard Care Coordinator program and this year the Iowa Chops have their eyes on the sky.

Tickets for Pink in the Rink are still available for purchase as low as $9 by calling the Iowa Chops at 515.564.8700 or fans can purchase tickets online now. For more information on the event, visit the official website of the Iowa Chops at www.iowachops.com.
