Chops comeback falls short in OT against Wolves on Wednesday
February 18, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
A valiant comback effort fell short in extra time again, as on Wednesday night the Iowa Chops fell to the Chicago Wolves 3-2 in overtime. The OT loss moved the Iowa Chops winless streak to a season-high five games and the Chops now sit two points behind both Houston and Chicago for the 4th and final playoff spot heading into Thursday's game at Houston.
Scoring was tough to come by in the first two periods for Iowa. Despite outshooting the Wolves, Chicago netted two power play goals to take a 2-0 lead to the lockerroom after two periods.
However, the Chops gave it all they had in the 3rd period, with goals by Troy Bodie (shorthanded and unassisted) and Matt Caruana. Caruana's goal was the game-tying marker midway through the 3rd period with assists to Eric Regan and Eric Boguniecki. The Chops had a chance to win the game late in the 3rd period, but Boguniecki's drive from the low slot was steered away by the shoulder of Wolves goalie Ondrej Pavalec.
The Chops came into their 2nd overtime in as many games with first as they fought for possession the entire period, but it wasn't enough, as Matt Anderson was able to notch the game-winner with 3:08 remaining in overtime off a rebound. The OT win by Chicago over Iowa marked the third straight game the Chops have taken the defending champs to extra time, however, all have ended in losses.
The Chops will head down to Houston on Thursday, and will look for their first win this season down there tomorrow, when they face off against the Aeros at 7:05 p.m.
