SeaWolves Offense Stalls in Sunday Loss

The SeaWolves could not cap their weekend with a win on Sunday afternoon, and saw their four-game win streak come to an end when they fell to the Altoona Curve 5-3 in 10 innings. The game was tied for most of the afternoon, but Altoona plated three runs in the tenth to pull away. Riley Greene extended his hit streak to nine games, but saw his home run streak end at four consecutive games.
Altoona found the early lead in the first inning when Diego Castillo lifted a home run just over the line in left field. The solo blast for Castillo was the only run allowed by A.J. Ladwig, as the right-hander extended his promising streak of five-inning starts to 10 games. Ladwig retired the final eight batters he faced, while Joe Navilhon and Cale Coshow worked scoreless innings each.
Erie had another slow start offensively against Omar Cruz. Cruz had kept the SeaWolves to just one run in six innings on Tuesday, and Erie was only able to plate on run against him again. After Kerry Carpenter was hit by a pitch, John Valente laid down a bunt single to put two runners on base. A pair of ground outs tied the game for Erie, with Drew Ward collecting the RBI.
Tied at one into the eighth inning, Altoona retook the lead against Billy Lescher. With a runner at first base, Ji-hwan Bae and Diego Castillo each collected two-out singles to score the go-ahead run. Brad Bass finished the eighth inning for Erie, stranding the bases loaded to keep the deficit at just one run. Bass tossed a scoreless ninth inning to end his day.
The Altoona bullpen could not hold the line, and Erie tied the game by drawing three walks, including one with the bases loaded by Eric De La Rosa.
With the game tied into the tenth inning, Henry Martinez continued to run into problems on the mound. Martinez allowed back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly for three runs in the extra frame, putting the game out of reach for Erie. Andre Lipcius finished the scoring for Erie in the bottom of the tenth when he scored on a wild pitch.
Erie hits the road for a lengthy trip, facing Richmond and Bowie for the next two weeks. Erie gets back to action on Tuesday against the Flying Squirrels, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Erie returns to UPMC Park on the final day of August when they open a six-game series with the Harrisburg Senators.
