Diaz retired six of the first seven batters faced before allowing a run in the third inning on Jeff Fiorentino's sacrifice fly. The righty retired eight of the final nine faced to earn his third win in as many starts.
Portland scored three times in the third inning off Oscar Alvarez (8-5), who began the game by retiring the first eight. With one out, Cory Keylor tripled and Iggy Suarez drew a walk. Alvarez fanned Jeff Corsaletti but Jeff Natale ripped an RBI single down the left line. Bubba Bell's ground ball was misplayed by first baseman Luis Jimenez, leading to two runs. Jimenez would commit a second error on a ball hit by Bell in the ninth inning, leading to Portland's fifth run.
Kyle Jackson fanned a season-high six, working three scoreless innings in relief of Diaz. The only base runner allowed by Jackson came on Paco Figueroa's two-out bunt-single in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mike James allowed one run and fanned pinch-hitter Gustavo Molina with runners at first and second to end the game.
Jay Johnson gave Portland a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning with a bases-loaded RBI single. The previous three batters - Corsaletti, Natale and Bell all singled to start the frame.
The Sea Dogs have won 9 of their last 12 on the road and take their fourth straight series away from Hadlock Field. On Thursday morning, the Sea Dogs and Baysox wrap up their three-game set at Prince George's Stadium.
