Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders, a night after dropping one to the Aeros in a pitching duel, experienced a taste of the hitting prowess that Akron is known for on Wednesday August 1. The Aeros collected 13 hits and defeated the Defenders 6-3. RHP Garrett Broshuis made the start for the Defenders and had a few tough innings. The Aeros came through in the top of the second inning with a leadoff home run (8) off the bat of OF Ryan Goleski and a few batters later SS Brandon Pinckney tagged an RBI double to put the Akron up 2-0. Broshuis' gave up his 23rd and 24th runs in inning number two this year, double the amount of runs surrendered in any other inning this season. But the Defenders came right back in the bottom of the frame after 1B Tyler Von Schell led the inning off with a walk, DH Randy Ruiz doubled and C Steve Holm provided an RBI groundout to score Von Schell. 2B Julio Cordido followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Ruiz and that tied the game at 2 after two full innings.

The Aeros struck again in the top of the fifth inning with two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles by 1B Michael Aubrey and Goleski once again. Akron pulled ahead 4-2 after five full innings. The Defenders a run closer after scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. OF Eugenio Velez worked a 1-out walk and OF John Bowker followed with an RBI double to cut the lead to 4-3 after six full innings.

The 4-3 mark was as close as the Defenders would get. The Aeros scored two insurance runs with a Goleski RBI single in the seventh and an Aubrey RBI single in the ninth. With the Defenders trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Randy Newsom retired the first two batters in order, but proceeded to give up singles to the next two batters. But with runners at first and second, Newsom got Bowker to ground out to first base to end the threat and the game. Akron picked up the victory 6-3.

Garrett Broshuis (L, 2-13) took the loss after tossing 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs (2 earned), 9 hits, 2 walks and striking out 2 batters. Shawn Nottingham (W, 8-9) picked up his ninth win of the year after pitching 6 innings, surrendering 3 runs, 2 hits, 3 walks and striking out 3 batters. Randy Newsom (S, 15) notched his fifteenth save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth, surrendering 2 hits and striking out a batter. The Defenders have now dropped two straight to the Aeros and look to rebound Thursday August 2 at 7:05 p.m. in the series finale.
