Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Portland, ME - The Bowie Baysox (23-34) gave up five first inning runs and fell to the Portland Sea Dogs (25-33) 8-5 on Wednesday night. It was the Baysox sixth consecutive road loss.
The Baysox struck first in the top of the first inning. Josh Barfield led off the game with a single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the Sea Dogs catcher. Buck Britton then got him in with a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Sea Dogs answered back with a big inning. With one out, Portland loaded up the bases. Bryce Brentz then gave them the lead with a two-run single to left. The very next batter, Dan Butler, followed with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Baysox responded with a three-run top of the second inning to cut the lead to one. They loaded up the bases on a double by Zelous Wheeler and back-to-back walks by Travis Adair and Steven Bumbry. Barfield then hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Wheeler to score from third. Buck Britton then got them within one run on a two-run double to make the score 5-4.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Sea Dogs got an insurance run. With two runners on, Juan Carlos Linares hit a single to right field that knocked in Heiker Meneses and made the score 6-4.
The Sea Dogs added another two more runs in the seventh inning. Shannon Wilkerson led off with a single and scored on a double by Oscar Tejeda. After Linares singled to put runners at the corners, Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled to knock in Tejeda and give the Sea Dogs am 8-4 lead.
In the ninth, the Baysox got a run with two outs on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 8-5, but could do no further damage.
Stolmy Pimentel started the game for the Sea Dogs and gave up all four runs, but did not factor into the decision because he lasted just four innings.
Marcos Duarte got his first win of the season. He threw three shutout innings and allowed just two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Bobby Bundy got his league worst eighth loss of the season. He went six innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Baysox will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow when RHP Zach Clark (3-4, 3.34) takes the mound against RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (3-4, 4.99).
The Baysox are in the midst of a six-game road trip. They will return home on Tuesday, June 12 for a six-game homestand that will include fireworks, a pint glass giveaway, and their annual Legends of Wrestling Night featuring Bret "The Hitman" Hart.
