LAST GAME: The Harrisburg Senators scored four runs over their final two innings and defeated the Binghamton Mets 9-6 in comeback fashion last night at Metro Bank Park. The B-Mets owned a one-run lead, but relievers Brandon Moore and Brad Holt allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a hit, two walks and a hit batsman. The B-Mets had jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a two-run homer by Jefry Marte in the first and an RBI single from Matt den Dekker in the second. The lead changed multiple times with Harrisburg taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth, Binghamton tying the game at four in the fifth, and the Senators jumping back out to a 5-4 edge on a homer from Jesus Valdez in the sixth. The B-Mets grabbed a 6-5 lead on Marte's two-run double in the seventh. Harrisburg tacked on two more runs against Holt in the ninth. Moore was saddled with his first loss of the year.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh (5-3, 2.17) makes his eleventh start of the season and first of the year against the Senators. McHugh comes off a victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in his previous start on May 28. The righty allowed two runs on five hits over a season-best eight innings. He walked just one and struck out a season-high eight. McHugh enters play tonight owning the fifth-lowest ERA in the Eastern League. Opponents are hitting just .224 against him, the fifth-lowest average allowed by any starter in the league.
LHP Mike Ballard (1-4, 3.12) makes his eleventh start of the season and first against the B-Mets. The lefty is on a three-game losing streak and has gone winless in his last seven starts. His only win of the year came against the Trenton Thunder on April 19. He took a no-decision in his most recent start against the Portland Sea Dogs on May 30. The Virginia native allowed one run on five hits over six innings without walking a batter. He has gone five innings or more and allowed two runs of fewer six times this season. Ballard pitched for five seasons in the Texas Rangers and spent last year with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He signed minor league free agent deal with the Nationals during this offseason.
SERIES OPENER SKID: The B-Mets loss last night was their seven consecutive defeat in the first game of a series. They have not earned the victory in a series opener since they defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9-2 to kick off a four-game series back on May 10. Overall, the B-Mets have gone 5-12 in the first game of a series this season.
A TRIO FOR DEN DEKKER: B-Mets outfielder Matt den Dekker collected three singles last night and scored two runs. It was his team-leading 21st multi-hit game of the season. He has racked up three hits in a game five times this year. It was the second time this year that Den Dekker did not collect an extra-base hit in a three-hit game.
MARTE PRODUCING: Jefry Marte led the B-Mets offense last night with a four-RBI performance. He laced a two-run homer in the first inning and gave the B-Mets a brief lead with a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh. He is the third B-Met to drive in four runs in a game this season, joining Rylan Sandoval (4/22 v POR) and Josh Rodriguez (5/11 @ NH).
PICK UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF: B-Met starter Collin McHugh makes his first start in June having not pitched since May 28. In five starts in May, McHugh went 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA. He walked just five over 35.1 innings.
KICKING INTO THE TOP 10: Matt den Dekker's three-hit performance last night raised his batting average to .310, currently the ninth-best average in the league.
REPEAT HISTORY: The B-Mets last win at Metro Bank Park came on July 31, 2011, when they earned a 5-2 victory. Collin McHugh earned the win for Binghamton.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets complete their three-game series against the Senators tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. RHP Zack Wheeler takes the mound against LHP Danny Rosenbaum.
