Perez Carries Hot Bat in 6-4 Aeros Win
June 6, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH -Akron catcher Roberto Perez went 3-4, with a pair of doubles, and drove home four runs Wednesday night, leading the Aeros to a 6-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats at Canal Park.
Perez enjoyed his first three-hit game of the season. It was also his first multi-RBI effort. He smacked a two-run, opposite field double in the second inning off Rock Cats starter Brett Jacobson (0-1). That two-bagger gave the Aeros a 3-2 lead.
After the Rock Cats (32-25) tied the game on a solo homer by Rene Tosoni, Perez struck again in the fourth with another double off Jacobson, this one to left field to chase home Nick Weglarz for a 4-3 Aeros lead.
Perez capped his night with an RBI single in the eighth, driving home Ryan Rohlinger with an insurance run to make it 6-3.
Akron closer Preston Guilmet worked the ninth and, despite giving up a run on a walk and two hits, posted his seventh save in nine chances.
The win went to Aeros reliever Jose De La Torre, who came into the game after starter Brett Brach was lifted after 4 1/3 innings. De La Torre (3-0) inherited a bases-loaded situation with one out in the fifth and the Aeros leading 4-3. He promptly struck out Evan Bigley and induced a pop-out from Matt Rizzotti to short-circuit the rally.
The Aeros (35-20) have won the first two of the series and go for the sweep on Thursday. Akron improved to a season-best, 15 games over the .500-mark, and also increased their home record to a sterling 22-7. The Aeros remain in first place in the EL West, 4 =C21/2 games over second-place Harrisburg.
The Aeros and Rock Cats (32-24) will conclude the series on Thursday evening at 7:05. LHP Logan Darnell (5-3, 4.50) is the scheduled starter for the Cats, while RHP Steven Wright (4-2, 1.72) will take the ball for Akron. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
