(Manchester, NH) - RF Adam Calderone (3-for-4, 3 RBI) delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning in New Hampshire's (24-23) 7-6 victory of the Portland Sea Dogs (22-23) on Wednesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The rubber matchup of the 3-game series takes place on Thursday morning beginning at 11:05 AM.
The rally in the ninth inning began with two outs on three consecutive singles by C Al Quintana, 3B Bryan Kervin and Calderone.
LHP Edgar Estanga (2-2) worked a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn the win for the âCats. RHP Justin Hedrick (1-2) yielded four hits and one run over 1.2 IP to take the loss for Portland. The Sea Dogs had two baserunners after the fifth inning and none reaching scoring position. New Hampshire's bullpen worked 5.2 scoreless innings on three hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
CF Bubba Bell's 2-run double in the fourth inning gave Portland their second lead of the night at 6-5. The âDogs knocked RHP Rey Gonzalez out of the game in the fourth inning, tagging the righty for six runs on six hits in 3.1 IP. Gonzalez's streak of allowing two earned runs or less was snapped at 17 - dating back to last July while pitching with High-A Dunedin. 2B Ryan Khoury (single) and RF Ryan Kalish (ground out) had RBI's before Bell's 2-run hit. New Hampshire tied the game in the fifth inning on 1B David Cooper's RBI-double off RHP Blake Maxwell (2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER)
Doubront lasted only 2.2 innings, yielding five runs (three earned) on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. New Hampshire scored used a 3-run third inning to snap a 2-2 tie and give the home team a 5-2 lead. With two outs, Calderon nailed a 2-run double and LF Cody Haerther (1-for-3, RBI) smacked a run-scoring single.
The Sea Dogs jumped on the board first with two runs off Gonzalez in the second inning. DH Aaron Bates led off the inning with a walk and 3B Jorge Jimenez singled. 1B Jon Still smacked a run-scoring double to right-center field and LF Reid Engel knocked in the second run with a ground out to second base. New Hampshire came right back to tie the game in their half of the second inning on a throwing error by SS Zach Borowiak, scoring Cooper and Calderone.
The rubber game of the series takes place on Thursday morning at 11:05 AM from Merchantsauto.com Stadium. RHP Junichi Tazawa (4-3, 2.74) makes his 10th start of the season against RHP Brandon Magee, who takes the hill for the 6th time.
