Streaking Phillies...Reading defeated the Aeros by the final score of 5-0 at Canal Park last night, marking the third shutout in four games for Phillies pitching. The third-place R-Phils have now won a season-high five straight games, and moved to only seven games behind Akron and 1.5 games behind Erie in the Southern Division. Akron retains the best record in professional baseball by one game over the Birmingham Barons (Double-A Southern League affiliate of the Chicago White Sox).
Gomez is Human...After delivering a perfect game in his last outing against Trenton, Jeanmar Gomez was touched for a season-high eight hits and five runs (four earned) in six innings last night, with two walks and four strikeouts. It was the first time he had allowed more than one run in any of his five starts for the Aeros. Yesterday's game marked the end of his 29.2 consecutive scoreless innings streak, while a leadoff single by Kevin Mahar in the second finished his run of 36 consecutive batters retired spanning 12 innings during his last three outings. Gomez is now 6-3 with a 1.83 ERA in nine starts between Akron and Class A Kinston on the season, with 45 strikeouts and only eight walks in 54.0 innings pitched.
Phenomenal Putnam...The first 2008 draftee to play for the Aeros is off to a very impressive start in the bullpen. Zach Putnam, a product of the University of Michigan and a native of Ann Arbor, has now pitched seven consecutive scoreless innings spanning four relief outings since allowing three runs to Bowie on May 12th. The hard-throwing right-hander had appeared in only eight games covering 33.2 innings as a professional before coming to Akron, going 2-1 with a 4.01 ERA in his time with Class A Mahoning Valley and Kinston. The fifth-round draft pick in last June's draft now has a 2.45 ERA in six games for the Aeros.
Righteous Rivero...SS Carlos Rivero was the lone star on offense for Akron last night as he collected his eighth multi-hit game of the season with a 2-4 outing, raising his batting average to .213. The 21-year-old Venezuela native has been a surprise slugger for the Aeros as his 20 RBI rank third on the team, and he is hitting .247 with 19 of those RBI in just 37 at-bats with men in scoring position. Rated as having the best infield arm by Baseball America, he has only three errors in 40 games played at short.
Guaranteed Win Night...Tonight's game against Reading is Guaranteed Win Night for all fans of the best team in professional baseball. If your hometown Aeros win tonight's game, all fans in attendance can redeem their ticket stubs for a free ticket to the game on Tuesday, June 9th against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 7:05 p.m. All exchanges must take place at Infield Outfitters or the Aeros Ticket Offices and day of game exchanges are acceptable, but are subject to availability.
Judge Judy...Today is the last day Akron will be short-handed in the pen as RHP Josh Judy is expected to return Thursday from the DL. The 34th-round pick in 2007 was 0-1 with two saves and a 7.00 ERA in seven relief outings before being sidelined.
