Trenton Tops New Britain 5-1

(New Britain, CT)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova tossed a season-high eight-plus innings, and the Thunder topped New Britain 5-1 on Wednesday night from New Britain Stadium in New Britain, CT. The Thunder have won three in a row, and five of six games on their seven-game road trip

Trenton scored first for the second straight night against the Rock Cats. With two outs in the first inning, Second baseman Chris Malec connected on a solo home run off of New Britain Starting Pitcher Cole DeVries (3-4) to make it 1-0. The home run was Malec's first of the season with the Thunder. He had hit one home run earlier in the season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Trenton (22-21) tallied a run in the second inning to increase the lead to 2-0. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez connected on an RBI infield single with the bases loaded and two outs.

New Britain (22-23) sliced the Trenton lead to 2-1 in the third inning. New Britain Second baseman Steve Tolleson picked up a two-out RBI single off of Nova (4-3). The Thunder responded with a run in the sixth inning. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez led off the frame with a double off of DeVries. First baseman Kevin Smith followed with an RBI single to give Trenton a 3-1 lead. But, Trenton scored two insurance runs in the ninth inning off of New Britain Reliever Anthony Slama to put the game away. Trenton Infielder Justin Snyder hit a two-run home run for his first home run of the season.

Nova pitched a season-high eight-plus innings for the win. He scattered five hits and one run. He struck out six and walked two. The eight innings is the longest outing for a Thunder starting pitcher this season. Nova was given the opportunity to try to pitch a complete game, but walked the first two batters of the ninth inning. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit came on for Nova and retired the final three batters of the game for his fourth save. DeVries went five-plus innings and yielded six hits and three runs to take the loss for New Britain. Nunez and Malec each had two hits in the win for the Thunder. With the win Trenton went over the .500 mark for the first time since May 10th (14-13).

Trenton and New Britain wrap up their three-game series on Thursday morning at New Britain Stadium. RHP Ryan Pope (2-2, 4.70) will pitch for the Thunder against New Britain RHP Matthew Fox (3-2, 3.48). Game time is set for 10:35 a.m.
