Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' catcher Mark Wagner has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to April 27th. Catcher John Otness joins the Sea Dogs from Extended Spring Training. Otness will wear uniform number 7. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Richie Lentz has been activated from the disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Blake Maxwell has been transferred to Single-A Lowell.
Wagner, 24 years-old, has appeared in 13 games for the Sea Dogs this season hitting .267 with two home runs and six RBI. He is rated by Baseball America as the "Best Defensive Catcher" in the Red Sox farm system. He has thrown out 8 of 11 base stealers in 2009, tops in the Eastern League. Wagner was selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
Otness, 27 years-old, has spent the last two seasons in Portland. Last season with the Sea Dogs he hit .263 with two home runs, and 33 RBI in 69 games. Otness was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on June 18, 2004.
Lentz has been sidelined since April 14th. He has appeared in one game for Portland this season, tossing two innings of no hit ball and recording five strikeouts against the Connecticut Defenders on April 10th. Lentz appeared in 16 games for the Sea Dogs in 2008, posting a 1-2 record with one save and 3.75 ERA. The 24 year-old was drafted by the Red Sox in the 19th round of the First-Year Player Draft.
Maxwell has appeared in four games (two starts) for the Sea Dogs this season posting a 0-0 record with a 9.64 ERA. Maxwell, 24 years-old, was selected by the Red Sox in the 40th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. This is his first season at the Double-A level. In 2008 with Single-A Lancaster, Maxwell posted 5-9 record with one save and a 3.32 ERA.
