Relentless Erie Tops Baysox in Extras

April 28, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

The Baysox bullpen blew a two run lead in the ninth inning, and the SeaWolves' Cale Iorg scored on a walk off sacrifice fly to give Erie a 5-4 win in eleven innings. Second baseman Paco Figueroa and center fielder Miguel Abreu each had two hits and Troy Patton pitched well again, but it wasn't enough as the Baysox fall to 8-10 on the season.

The Baysox offense looked to continue their hot hitting as they tallied three runs in the top of the third inning off Erie starter Jon Kibler. Designated hitter Adam Donachie led off the inning with a double and later moved to third on a passed ball. One batter later, third baseman Melvin Dorta walked to put men on the corners for left fielder Jonathan Tucker, who stroked a double to left to score Donachie and put runners on second and third. Figueroa followed with an RBI single and first baseman Brandon Snyder grounded into a force out which scored Tucker and put the Baysox up 3-0. Earlier in the game, Snyder singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games which ties his own team high on the season.

Left-hander Troy Patton continued to pitch well in his fourth start on the season. Erie tallied a single run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Scott Sizemore, and tallied another in the fifth on an RBI double by Deik Scram. Despite the two earned runs, Patton limited the damage and left the game with the lead in hope of his third win of the season. The Baysox southpaw worked 6.0 innings scattering six hits and a walk while striking out five. His 1.21 ERA is best amongst Baysox starters on the season.

The Baysox added a run in the top of the sixth off Kibler. Figueroa started the inning off with a single, moved to second on a ground out by Snyder and advanced to third on a single by right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion. Abreu chased Figueroa home with a single back up the middle into center field to make the score 4-2. In six games against Erie this season, Abreu is hitting .423 (11-26) with a double, a home run and five runs batted in.

Erie looked to get back in it against the Baysox bullpen in the eighth. After walking the first two batters he faced to start the inning, right-hander Ryan Keefer was replaced by Chad Thall. The Baysox lefty induced Brennan Boesch to ground into a double play before getting Jeff Frazier swinging to get out of the jam. Thall would go back out for the ninth, but the SeaWolves refused to go quietly in search of their first win over the Baysox this season.

Thall walked Alex Avila to start the ninth, and one batter later gave up a single to Shawn Roof which brought the go ahead run to the plate. Deik Scram answered the call by lining a double to left which scored Avila and brought the SeaWolves within one. Right-hander Josh Perrault was called on to face reigning Eastern League Hitter of the Week Maxwell Leon with the go-ahead run on second. Leon grounded a ball to Paco Figueroa at second, but it got the job done as Shawn Roof crossed the plate with the tying run. Perrault got out of the inning by striking out Jeff Frazier, but the damage was already done as the two teams headed to extra-innings for the second night in a row.

After a scoreless tenth, the Baysox looked to take the lead in the eleventh as the first two hitters reached against Erie righty Josh Rainwater. Erie skipper Tom Brookens went to his closer Brett Jensen, who gave up a single to catcher Guillermo Rodriguez before getting the next two hitters to keep the game tied at four apiece.

It was the last chance the Baysox would get, as Erie catcher Alex Avila doubled to start the eleventh off lefty Ryan Rodriguez. Pinch runner Cale Iorg moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and one batter later Deik Scram lifted a sacrifice fly which was deep enough to score the run and give the SeaWolves the win. Scram was a thorn in the side of the Baysox all night, finishing 3-5 with two doubles and three runs batted in on the night.

The loss drops the Baysox (8-10) to six games behind division leader Akron, while Erie (11-7) moves within three games of the Aeros. The two teams will close out the series tomorrow morning as RHP Brandon Erbe (0-3, 1.80) goes for Bowie against Erie RHP Alfredo Figaro (2-0, 0.95). Game time is set for 11:05 a.m.
