Altoona drops 3-1 decision Reading

Altoona Curve News Release

(Reading, PA) The Reading Phillies scored two times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie as the Phillies won the first game of a three game series with the Altoona Curve, beating the Curve 3-1 before a crowd of 4,050 fans on Monday night at First Energy Stadium.

Quinton Berry led off the fifth inning with a walk off losing pitcher Brad Lincoln (0-2). One out later, Michael Taylor singled to center, putting runners at first and second. A wild pitch by Lincoln moved both runners into scoring position. Brian Stavisky gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly. Kevin Mahar made it 3-1 when he singled to left, scoring Taylor from second base.

That's all the Phillies would need as Joe Savery and two relievers danced in and out of trouble all night long. Savery (1-1) allowed a run on six hits over six innings of work to pick up his first win in Double-A ball. Matt German and Mike Zagurski combined to blank the Curve over the final three innings with Zagurski getting his first save of the season.

The Curve had plenty of chances to score more runs, but finished the night 0-10 with runners in scoring position. The loss drops the Curve to 5-13 on the season. The news could get much worse tomorrow as prized prospect Jose Tabata left the ballgame after straining his hamstring while running up the first base line in the top of the third inning.

The middle game of the three game series is set for Tuesday night at 6:35. Right-hander Jared Hughes (0-2 2.61) gets the call for the Curve. Reading will counter with righty Vance Worley (1-0 3.12).
