Kontos leads Trenton to 2-0 win over Connecticut

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting Pither George Kontos yielded only three hits in six shutout innings to lead the Thunder past Connecticut 2-0 on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton halted a two-game losing streak, and is now 4-1 on the season against Connecticut.

Trenton (9-7) broke-up a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Second baseman Reegie Corona led off the frame by walking against Connecticut RHP Jesse Foppert. He stole second base, and then tagged up to third base on a fly out by Left fielder Colin Curtis. First baseman Jorge Vazquez followed with an RBI single to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The Thunder extended the lead to 2-0 in the eighth inning. Corona led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a single by Curtis. With one out, Corona scored his second run of the game on an RBI single by Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci. Corona, Curtis and Vechionacci each had two hits in the win for the Thunder. Curtis extended his hitting streak to 13-games.

Trenton Starting Pitcher George Kontos (1-1) tossed six shutout innings. He allowed only three hits. Kontos tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. Thunder Reliever Michael Dunn came on for Kontos and pitched two perfect innings. Dunn has now struck out 18 and walked only two in six appearances so far this season. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit came on and tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save. Connecticut Starting Pitcher Jesse Foppert (0-1) took the loss. He allowed four hits and one run in four innings.

Trenton and Connecticut play the middle game of a three-game series on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. RHP Zach McAllister (1-0, 2.08) will start for Trenton against Connecticut RhP Henry Sosa (0-0, 3.00). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
