Defenders Fall 2-0

April 28, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

TRENTON, NJ- The Defenders entered into another pitchers matchup, this time with Trenton and couldn't get the bats going as they fell 2-0 Monday night at Waterfront Park.

A 1B-Jorge Vasquez RBI single in the fourth inning off of Defenders starter, RHP-Jesse Foppert to plate 2B-Reegie Corona would be all Trenton would need to take game one of three.

The Defenders had RHP-Jesse Foppert (0-1) making just his third start of the year matched up against the Thunder's ace, RHP-George Kontos (1-1). Foppert looked good through three but a rocky fourth sent him packing trailing 1-0. Foppert gave up just four hits and one earned run while striking out one in just four innings of work as he suffered his first loss of the season.

Connecticut's offense could never find a rhythm at the plate as they only would get one runner to third base all ballgame and a majority of it had to do with Kontos. The Thunders starter fired six scoreless innings allowed three hits, walked two and struck out eight in his first win.

Trenton added an insurance run in the eighth inning when 3B-Marcos Vechionacci slapped a base hit to left field to score Corona from second base to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead.

The Defenders would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth but a base running mistake by pinch runner, Antoan Richardson would end the game.

Tomorrow's game two matchup has the Defenders RHP-Henry Sosa going up against the Thunders RHP-Zach McAllister. First pitch is slated for 7:05pm from Waterfront Park. Catch all the action on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310AM starting at 6:40pm or online at ctdefenders.com.
