Sea Dogs Honor Maine's Leading Women

Portland, Maine-The Portland Sea Dogs and the Portland Press Herald held the first Leading Women Day at Hadlock Field on Monday, May 10th prior to that evening's Sea Dogs game against the Binghamton Mets, where five of Maine's leading women were recognized for their contributions to the community. The event also served as a fundraiser for the Amy St. Laurent Foundation, which raised $1,900.00.

The Sea Dogs and Portland Press Herald collaborated in an effort to recognize the many women in the State of Maine who are making positive contributions to their communities, businesses, families and other areas during these trying economic times. Since March, the Portland Sea Dogs and the Portland Press Herald have received nominations for women in the categories of Business Leadership, Community Activism, Education, Non-Profits and Public Service.

One woman from each category was selected whose tireless efforts and commitment make Maine a better place to live, work and raise a family. The winners were selected by the committee based on longevity of service, contribution to their respective industries and interests, capstone accomplishments, ability to overcome adversity as well as their strong vision and commitment to the future.

Before the game Portland Police Officer Gayle Petty, Portland Police Officer and R.A.D. Instructor Coreena Dyer-Behnke and Business Owner Sari Green were recognized on the field for their outstanding efforts in the community. Recognized but unable to attend were St. James school teacher Carol du Bois and Family Crisis Services Executive Director Lois Rickett. Each winner threw-out a ceremonial first-pitch prior to the Sea Dogs game.

Officer Gayle Petty was nominated by her peers in the category for Public Service for her tireless work as a Police Officer, and in particular her work in the Munjoy Hill area of Portland. Officer Petty was lauded by her colleagues as a true professional dedicated to her police work in Portland as well as building a stronger, safer community as a resident.

Officer Coreena Dyer-Behnke was nominated in the category of Community Activism, for her extensive volunteer efforts in the Portland Police Department's R.A.D. Program/Amy St. Laurent Foundation. Officer Behnke volunteers her time and efforts to teach numerous women valuable self defense skills through this program.

Sari Green, the winner in Business Leadership, is a business veteran in the Portland community. She is also the founder of Sage Data Securities and a founding member of the Maine Anti-Phishing Coalition, which works with numerous community banks to help keep information safe.

The highlight of the evening was the event held in the picnic area, which raised $1,900.00 for the Amy St. Laurent Foundation. The Amy St. Laurent Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 in the honor of Maine native Amy St. Laurent. The ASLF sponsors the Portland Police R.A.D. program that teaches valuable self defense classes to women. Additional donations to the Amy St. Laurent Foundation can be sent to:
