New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Carlos Gutierrez turned in perhaps his best start of the season, but he was out-dueled by Trenton's Jeremy Bleich as the Thunder edged the Rock Cats, 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Bleich (2-2) limited the Rock Cats to three hits and one run through 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five. The lone Rock Cats' run came in the bottom of the seventh. Rene Tosoni led off with a double and scored on Joe Benson's groundout to short.

The Thunder took advantage by two miscues by Rock Cats' shortstop Estarlin De Los Santos at the start of the second inning. De Los Santos, who had three errors on the night, overthrew first base to allow leadoff man Austin Romine to reach base safely and advance to second. Brandon Laird then hit a grounder to De Los Santos that went under the infielder's glove and allowed Romine to score the first run of the game. Gutierrez then forced the next batter into a double play before Jose Gil popped out to end the inning.

Marcos Vechionacci added another run for the Thunder when he led off the third with a solo shot over the center field wall.

Gutierrez (0-2) finished the night with two runs - one earned - on six hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked none. Joe Testa added two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

The Rock Cats had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Chris Parmelee scorched a grounder to first to end the game. Tosoni was left stranded on first after hitting a two-out single. Grant Duff notched his fifth save for Trenton.
