Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland Sea Dogs (41-40) at New Britain Rock Cats (38-43)
RHP Charlie Zink (8-2, 2.59) vs. LHP Ryan Mullins (0-2, 3.60)
Game #82 - Thursday, July 5, 2007 - New Britain Stadium - New Britain, CT - 7:05 p.m.
'ANOTHER CAT FIGHT': The Sea Dogs play their final stretch of games before the All-Star break. After being swept by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in a four game set at Hadlock Field, the Dogs took game one of four from New Britain. Game two of their doubleheader was rained out. Portland has two more games with New Britain before they travel to New Hampshire for their final four games before the break.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Clay Buchholz (7-2) came out of the bullpen in relief for the first time in his career, and earned the win in Portland's 4-2 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats. The Sea Dogs came out of the gates swinging, as they scored 2 runs in the 1st inning off losing pitcher Jay Sawatski (3-3). Jed Lowrie knocked in Jeff Corsaletti with an RBI single to left field, for the first run of the game. Immediately following, Jeff Natale smacked a sacrifice fly that scored Cory Keylor. Jeff Corsaletti and Jed Lowrie weren't done, however, as they both smacked solo home runs that accounted for the final two Sea Dogs runs. Andrew Dobies started game one for Portland, and went four shutout innings, although he didn't get the win because he did not throw the required 5 innings necessary to qualify for the win. Mike James earned his 14th save of the year as he fired the final 1.2 innings.
BUCKING THE TREND: For the first time in his career, Clay Buchholz came out of the bullpen to pitch in relief...In last night's game, Buchholz entered the game in the 5th inning and fired 1.1 innings of relief...Although he did allow one run and one hit, Buchholz earned the victory, his 7th of the year and 1st in relief. Last year Buchholz started all 24 games he appeared in between Wilmington and Greenville, this year his first 15 appearances had been as a starter. Buchholz has appeared in 55 career games in his minor league career.
NOT BRINGIN' EM IN!: The Sea Dogs left 43 runners on base in their previous four-game series with New Hampshire...They also hit a paltry .121 (5-for-41) with runners-in-scoring position in the series.
THE BUCK IS NOT STOPPING HERE: Clay Buchholz established a franchise record by striking out 46 batters in June...Earlier today, Buchholz was named the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week, by going 1-0, 0.79 in two starts and fanning 15...Charlie Zink was selected as the E.L Pitcher of the week last week, marking the third time in franchise history that Sea Dogs pitchers earned the honor in consecutive weeks...Jonathan Papelbon and Jon Lester (June 27th- July 3rd and July 4th- July 10th, 2005)...Josh Beckett and Hansel Izquierdo (August 13th-August 19th and August 20th- August 26th, 2001)
