New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Binghamton, NY- The Toronto Blue Jays announced today that first baseman Lyle Overbay will be joining the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats on a Major League rehabilitation assignment. Overbay, 30, is scheduled to join the Fisher Cats on Friday in Binghamton (NY) and be in the line-up for the Fisher Cats/Mets 7:05pm game that night. He is expected to remain with the club at least through the end of their three-game home series with Portland that concludes Monday, July 9 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
"It will be quite a treat for our fans to see a member of the Blue Jays for an entire weekend," said Fisher Cats President/General Manager Rick Brenner. "We welcome Lyle to New Hampshire and certainly hope he can help the team get a few more wins in their ongoing battle for a Northern Division playoff spot."
Overbay is a career .289 hitter with 69 home runs and 307 RBI over seven Major League seasons. He has been on Toronto's 15-day disabled list with a broken right hand since June 15.
The left-handed-swinging first baseman was batting .256 with eight home runs and 27 RBI in 55 games at the time of his injury. The Blue Jays acquired Overbay from the Arizona Diamondbacks on December 7, 2005 along with a player to be named later (Ty Taubenheim) in exchange for Dave Bush, Gabe Gross and a player to be named later (former Fisher Cat Zach Jackson).
Overbay, originally an 18th round draft choice of the Diamondbacks in 1999, will become the third Blue Jay to join the Fisher Cats on a rehabilitation assignment this season, following right-handed starting pitcher Victor Zambrano (May 24) and right-handed relief pitcher Brandon League (June 3-12).
The Fisher Cats return home Saturday night to take on the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs, at 7:05pm. Saturday night's game between your Fisher Cats and the Sea Dogs is George Weston Bakeries Salute to Bread Night, capped by an Atlas Fireworks Show. On Sunday, July 8, the first 1,000 children through the gates for the 1:05pm game will receive a Replica Jersey of New Hampshire native Chris Carpenter, courtesy of U.S. Cellular. Monday's game, July 9, is a 12:05pm start which features USA Subs Baseball Bingo and Camp Day.
