Clinton LumberKings News Release
CLINTON, IA - Connor Scott homered into the Lumber Lounge in right field in the bottom of the 10th inning for a Clinton LumberKings 5-3 win over the Kane County Cougars on Friday night at NelsonCorp Field. The walk-off win was the second of the season for Clinton (27-26) and brought to an end a three-game losing streak.
The lion's share of the runs for the LumberKings came across on home runs. In the bottom of the first inning, Clinton raced out of the gates against Cougars' (29-25) starter Levi Kelly. Three straight hits opened the game with Will Banfield capping the rally with a two-run home run center field - his fifth of the year.
The two-run lead held up for most of the night thanks to LumberKings starter Humberto Mejia. He worked around base runners in first and second innings before allowing Kane County to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a Tra Holmes RBI single.
Mejia worked into the seventh for Clinton but failed to get through the inning when the Cougars rallied for two runs to take their only lead of the night, 3-2.
Mejia was given a no decision for his 6.1 innings of work; allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.
The LumberKings tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Sean Reynolds leadoff with a double off the wall in right and moved to third on a Bubba Hollins flyout. Davis Bradshaw then brought home Reynolds on a safety squeeze that tied the game at three.
The game remained tied through nine innings. Tyler Mitzel was the only other pitcher used by Clinton and worked 3.2 shutout innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the year. He allowed only one hit while walking none and striking out three.
Mitzel (4-3) worked around the free base runner assigned to second base to start the top of the 10th inning (part of Minor League Baseball's extra inning rules) and kept the game tied at three headed to the bottom of the 10th.
Andy Toelken (3-1) came on in relief for Kane County and did not record an out. The first batter he faced was Connor Scott who homered on a 2-2 pitch to right for the LumberKings second walk-off win of the season.
The home run was part of a three-hit night for Scott who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and his third home run of the season.
The LumberKings will now head home to open up a six-game homestand with the first game of a three-game series against the Kane County Cougars on Friday night. Clinton will throw righty Chris Vallimont (3-3, 2.43) while Kane County will tap righty Matt Tabor (0-1, 2.37). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas with the pregame show on 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI or online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app.
Stay after the game on Friday night for the first postgame "Fireworks Spectacular" of the season!
