Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - After falling behind early to the Fort Wayne TinCaps, the Great Lakes Loons used two four-run innings to steal a series-opening victory at Parkview Field, 9-6.
The Loons (33-19) first big inning came in the fourth against Fort Wayne starter Ramon Perez. Both Leonel Valera and Jacob Amaya doubled scoring multiple runs in the frame as part of their three-hit performances for the Loons. For Valera, it was the first three-hit game of his single-A career.
The second big inning of the night came in the sixth. Against struggling right-hander Angel Acevedo (L, 0-6), Great Lakes struck with five consecutive hits before the first out of the frame was recorded. The inning went: Valera triple, Dan Robinson RBI-triple, Miguel Vargas RBI-single, Amaya single, Dillon Paulson two-RBI double. The necessary runs had been scored.
Justin Hagenman, Austin Drury and Jasiel Alvino (S, 2) combined to throw the final four innings for the Loons after Jose Chacin (W, 5-2) allowed five runs in five innings. Drury highlighted the bullpen's performance with five strikeouts in two scoreless frames.
The Loons officially finish the month of May with a 22-7 record. 22 wins are the second most in any month in franchise history only trailing the 24 wins the 2010 team posted in July of that season. With a 12-4 finish on the road in May, the current Loons tie the 2010 team for most road wins in a single month.
Great Lakes' lead in the Midwest League Eastern Division remains at one game, but their lead on the third place team is now at 2.5 games.
Game two of the Loons' current three-game series in Fort Wayne continues on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. EDT. Radio coverage starts, as always, 30 minutes prior to first pitch.
