Schaeffer, Chappell Rejoin Checkers

CHARLOTTE, NC-Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today that rookie forward Chris Chappell has been reassigned to the team by the New York Rangers from Hartford of the American Hockey League and defenseman Kevin Schaeffer was returned from the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters.

Chappell has played in five games with the Checkers this season and recorded a goal and an assist. He has also skated in six contests with Hartford, collecting five penalty minutes.

The 21-year-old rookie played four seasons for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League and was rewarded over the summer with an NHL contract with the Rangers. In 2008-09, he scored a team-leading 38 goals and 76 points in 68 games. He also led the team in power-play goals with 18 and was named to the OHL All-Star Classic.

Schaeffer has skated in eight games with the Checkers, collecting two assists. He has also appeared in seven games with the Monsters, adding two assists.The 24-year old blueliner spent the majority of last season with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. In 48 games, he registered three assists and 14 penalty minutes.

Schaeffer was a sixth round pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and played four seasons at Boston University before joining the pro ranks.

The Checkers (11-4-2-0) will host Gwinnett tonight at Time Warner Cable Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. and ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.
