Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators took an early lead and never looked back, as they gained redemption after Sunday's loss with a 5-2 victory. Danny Taylor led the way in net with a 36 save performance for Gwinnett.
The Gladiators jumped out to an early lead, just as they have for the past few games. Kenny Roche for the Checkers attempted to carry the puck out of the zone when Jason Lawrence stepped to him and knocked him to the ice. Dan Sullivan picked up the loose puck and attempted a quick wrap around shot. Ryan Munce turned the shot aside, but Lawrence followed up the play and wristed the puck over a sprawling Munce.
Chad Denny scored for the Gladiators 50 seconds later, after a turnover in then Gladiators offensive end. Denny picked off an outlet past and wristed a laser right past an unsuspecting Munce. Munce never saw the shot through the traffic as Denny picked up his second goal in two games. The Gladiators held that lead into the 1st intermission.
Defensive play prevailed for a majority of the second period, with neither team getting many good scoring chances. The Checkers however would strike for the lone marker of the 2nd. Daniel Tkaczuk won an offensive zone faceoff cleanly back to Julien Brouillette at the point. Brouillette was able to blast a shot through some traffic, and Tkaczuk was there to bang home the rebound, bringing the score to 2-1 with the Gladiators still holding the advantage. Official time of the goal was 17:58 of the second period.
Scoring opened up in the third period, as Adam Berti scored the first of three Gladiators goals. Sam Roberts held the puck in at the left point. Roberts found a shooting lane and blasted the puck on net. Berti found the rebound and stuffed it home just 38 seconds into the third period.
The next Gladiators goal came on the Applebees power play. After a nice pad save by Danny Taylor, the Gladiators rushed the puck back up the right wing side. Zanoski moved the puck down to Berti, and Berti found Sullivan camped up at the top of the slot. Sullivan picked the top corner to put the Gladiators up 4-1.
Kevin Schaffer pulled the Checkers back within 2 goals with a power play goal at the 11:06 mark. A hard shot through traffic by Tkaczuk found Schaffer on the back door for the goal.
Drew Paris added an empty netter while shorthanded with 14 seconds left to seal the victory for Gwinnett. Sam Roberts picked up an assist on the goal.
Danny Taylor made 36 stops for Gwinnett, as the Gladiators improved to 10-5-2-1. The Checkers fell to 11-5-1-1 with the loss.
