Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers could not seem to get anything going offensively and they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Gwinnett Gladiators on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Arena. The game was the fourth meeting in a row between the two teams.

Daniel Tkaczuk added a goal and an assist for the Checkers and now has 17 points in 10 games since joining the team. Gwinnett goaltender Danny Taylor stopped 36 of 38 shots for the victory.

The Gladiators got on the board first just over 10 minutes into the game on a goal by former Checker Jason Lawrence. Lawrence, who was traded to Gwinnett last week, was parked in the slot and one-timed a pass from Dan Sullivan for his third of the year.

Less than a minute later, Gwinnett made it a 2-0 game on a wrist shot from the point that seemed to fool Checkers netminder Ryan Munce. The goal was unassisted and came at the 11:43 mark of the first period.

Early in the second, Charlotte would answer back and make it a one-goal game on a tally by Tkaczuk. Julien Brouillette took a shot from the blue line and Tkaczuk was there to bang home the rebound for his sixth of the season.

The Checkers held a narrow 21-20 shot advantage through two periods of play, however Gwinnett struck again twice, early in the third, to take a 4-1 lead on goals by Adam Berti and Dan Sullivan.

To be expected between two teams who have seen each other four times in seven nights, tempers flared in the third period, resulting in a flurry of scrums.

Charlotte would net a late goal on the power play by Kevin Schaeffer but it wasn't enough as Gwinnett added an empty-net tally to hang on for the 4-2 victory. The two teams will meet again on Sunday in Gwinnett.

The Checkers (11-5-2-0) will host Elmira on Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. and ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com
