Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH -- Nolan Schaefer's record setting performance earned the Barons a 2-0 win over the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday night in Cleveland. Supported with two-points from Steve Bernier, Schaefer finished the night with 35-saves and back-to-back shutouts of the Rampage.
Just like Tuesday night's game the Barons scored the first goal of the game on the power play. Garrett Stafford powered home his sixth goal of the season with a slap shot over the shoulder of San Antonio goaltender Karl Goehring. Steve Bernier, who registered three points in Tuesday's game, assisted on the Stafford goal along with goaltender Nolan Schaefer. San Antonio out-shot the Barons 14-12 in the opening period, the majority of those shots occurring while on a 1:50 two-man advantage.
Bernier continued to carry the hot hand for the Barons adding an assist in the second period on the only goal of the stanza. Mike Iggulden zipped a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Goehring just 28-seconds into the period extending the Barons lead to 2-0. Matt Carkner also assisted on the goal for his 10th point of the season and second in-as-many games.
A scoreless third period preserved Nolan Schaefer's second consecutive shutout as the Barons skated to a 2-0 win. The Barons were out-shot 35-27 in the game, but preserved the win by allowing just nine shots in the final frame.
With the 35-save performance, Schaefer became the first goalie in Barons franchise history to post back-to-back shutouts. In fact, the Barons as a team earned the first consecutive shutouts in team history as well. Schaefer is now shy of tying his career best for shutouts in a season at three and has added another shutout to his franchise leading career donut of seven.
The Barons next contest will be a mid-day match up at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario against the Marlies. The game is scheduled for Monday at 12:30pm EST, prior to the Maple Leafs meeting that night versus Pittsburgh. The broadcast of Monday's game will be heard live on-line in an AUDIO ONLY format at the Barons official web site, www.clevelandbarons.net. The Barons then return to home ice Friday, Saturday and Sunday for games against Milwaukee, Peoria and Manitoba respectively. Saturday's game against the Rivermen begins at 1pm EST.
