December 29, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
The Grand Rapids Rampage has announced the signing of three players from its recent receiver & kicker tryouts. Two of the players, Brian Alford and Brad Selent, have previous AFL experience while the other, Nathan Wruble, comes straight out of college. Overall, the Rampage has acquired five players from open tryouts this offseason (previous signings were Mark Radlinski and Tyler Moore).
Alford (6.01, 185, 06/07/75, Purdue) finished his college career with Purdue as the Boilermakers' all-time leader in receiving yards (3,029) and touchdowns (31). He went on to become a third-round draft choice (70th overall) by the New York Giants in 1998 and spent three seasons in the NFL with the Giants (1998-99) and the Miami Dolphins (2000). Alford had two receptions for 18 yards and a seven-yard touchdown during his NFL tenure. He played two games with the AFL's Indiana Firebirds in 2003 and tallied six receptions for 148 yards and three touchdowns, including a team-high 45-yard score.
Selent (5.11, 189, 09/30/78, Western Michigan) garnered his AFL experience playing with the Detroit Fury for the final five games of the 2002 season. That year he finished with 42 points on 5-of-11 field goals and 27-of-31 extra points while also recording four tackles and recovering an onside kick on special teams. He finished his collegiate career as the MAC's all-time leading scorer among kickers and is WMU's all-time leading scorer (307 points). He played 46 college games, making 50-of-74 field goals and 157-of-165 extra points and earning recognition as the 1998 MAC Special Teams Player of the Year.
Wruble (6.07, 255, 11/12/81, Ferris State) was a two-sport athlete at Ferris State, playing football and basketball. He played four years of basketball (2000-03) and two years of football (2004-05). A four-time GLIAC All-Academic selection, Wruble played 18 games as a tight end for the Bulldogs football team and caught 11 balls for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He graduated this past May with a degree in Survey Engineering.
All three players will be competing for their positions in training camp beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2006. Alford will compete at offensive specialist with Aaron Bailey and Anthony Hines and may also see time at wide receiver/linebacker. Wruble will face Robert Reed and Travis Burns at WR/LB and Selent will challenge Peter Martinez for the starting kicker position.
