Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - Saturday, May 8th, Cheney Stadium will fill with women and men in uniform. This year has seen an abnormally high amount of redeployment. With so many returning troops, the Rainiers are hoping to pack the stadium and show our support of our past, present, and future troops and their families.

Salute to Armed Forces Night will begin with a flyover. McChord Air Force pilot, Senior Master Sgt. Richard Lutz, otherwise known as "Goose Poop", will be flying his C-17 over the stadium immediately prior to first pitch. Listen for the Joint Service Band, who will be playing at the gates as fans enter while Joint Base Color Guard is scheduled to present our nation's colors. Centennial Elementary School will be honoring America with our national anthem.

The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Colonel Thomas Brittain, Joint Base Lewis-McChord Garrison Commander who will be escorted by Garrison Command Sgt Major Matthew Barnes. Members of the Air Force, Army, and Navy will be lining up with the team during introductions and the national anthem. Fans can also see Black Hills Little League and Fife/Milton/Edgewood Little League form a yellow ribbon of support in the outfield during the national anthem.

Throughout the game, the concourse will house several of Pepsi's Eleven-Eleven campaign booths where fans can donate to the Beyond Tribute Coalition. Fans can also text "VETS" to 85944 and then reply "Yes" to a confirmation they receive to donate $11 to the cause. The coalition's goal is to get 11 million people to donate $11 which the coalition will then distribute to one of eleven charity organizations that assist military and their families.

Rainiers players will be wearing special all-over camouflage jerseys that will be autographed post-game and sold to the highest bidder in an in-game auction. All profits from the auction of the game-worn jerseys will benefit Operation Homefront, which provides emergency and morale support to troops, the families they leave behind, and wounded warriors.

The Rainiers are offering a special $5 ticket for members of the military holding a military or DoD identification. For more information about Salute to Armed Forces Night, please contact Ryan Latham at (253) 722-1041 or by email at rlatham@tacomarainiers.com
