Express Quiet Sounds 2-1, Clinch Series
May 5, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Casey Daigle induced a game-ending groundout from Johnny Raburn, stranding runners at first and second, as the Round Rock Express edged the Nashville Sounds 2-1 in Wednesday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (10-16) clinched the series with the win, their third in a row against the Sounds (16-9) and fourth in their last five games.
Round Rock, which snapped a four-game losing streak in one-run games, clinched its first series win of the season against a Nashville squad that entered the series with the PCL's best record. The Express, which entered the series with the league's worst record, go for the series sweep Thursday.
Jason Bourgeois' one-out RBI single in the fourth snapped a 1-1 tie, and the Express pitching staff silenced the Sounds the rest of the way.
Chris Shelton arguably had the play of the game in the seventh inning. With a runner at third and one out, the Express played the infield with the left-handed batting Raburn at the plate. Raburn ripped a 1-1 Evan Englebrook offering down the first-base line, but Shelton, who Tuesday was named Express defensive player of the month for April, made a diving snag of the ball and stepped on the bag to retire Raburn. Englebrook then struck out pinch-hitter Joe Koshansky to end the threat.
Starter Polin Trinidad (1-0) earned the victory, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Englebrook, Gary Majewski and Daigle worked 1.0 scoreless inning each to close the game. It was Daigle's first save of the season in three tries.
Nashville starter Chuck Lofgren (4-2) took the loss; he allowed two runs on 11 hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Round Rock had 13 batters reach safely while Lofgren was in the game, but he was aided by four fielder's choices and two ground-ball double plays.
Adam Heether singled with two outs in the top of the first, and Eric Almonte followed with an RBI triple off the wall in left-center. That lead was short-lived, though, as the Express answered in the bottom of the inning. Brian Bogusevic doubled with two outs, and Chris Shelton reached on an infield single. Matt Kata followed with a single to center of the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Bogusevic.
Bogusevic finished 4-for-5 with a run scored, while Bourgeois, Shelton, Kata and Drew Locke each had two hits. Locke, who turned in his first multiple-hit game of the season, also walked twice.
Trent Oeltjen, who tripled to leadoff the seventh, had the Sounds' lone multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4.
Round Rock and Nashville conclude the series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Roy Corcoran (0-4, 3.77 ERA) gets his first start of the season for the Express. It will be Corcoran's fourth career start in 331 career appearances. Right-hander Kameron Loe (3-1, 2.87 ERA) starts on the mound for Nashville.
