Sox Take Series' Third Game Versus Fresno, 6-2

May 5, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Avenging their back-to-back losses at the hands of the Fresno Grizzlies, the Sky Sox took the third game of their four-game home stand Wednesday night at Security Service Field, prevailing 6-2.

After a quiet first two innings, Fresno broke the 0-0 stalemate with an RBI single by second baseman Brock Bond. The squeaker found the hole up the middle between Jonathan Herrera and Paul Lo Duca, allowing shortstop Juan Ciriaco to scamper home from second.

The Sky Sox answered immediately, however. Rallying with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, right fielder Matt Miller lined a triple to right-center, plating Jonathan Herrera to even the score at one. Brad Eldred drove in Miller in the next at-bat to put the Sox ahead by one.

The Sox put up two again in the bottom of the fourth, tagging reliever Osiris Matos after being called upon to relieve starter Horacio Ramirez. With a walk and a single to start the inning, a one-out foul pop out by Jonathan Herrera threatened to stop the surge in its tracks. Center fielder Cole Garner came to the rescue, however, launching a triple to the corner in right, plating Paul Lo Duca and Warren Schaeffer - the Sox seizing control, 4-1.

The Grizzlies and Sky Sox would trade scores in the sixth and seventh, respectively, making the score 5-2 Colorado Springs. A Matt Miller sac-fly put the Sox up by four in the bottom of the eighth, with Juan Rincon putting on the finishing touches with a flawless ninth.

With the win, the Sky Sox broke their two-game losing streak, improving to 14-12 while maintaining sole possession of first place in the Pacific North. Fresno falls to 17-9 with the loss. The Springs' Alan Johnson (2-0, 3.05) recorded his second victory of the season while the Grizzlies' Horacio Ramirez (1-1, 4.12) earns his first defeat of the year.

Colorado Springs will send recently acquired lefty Josh Muecke (0-1, 11.25) to the mound for tomorrow night's series finale against righty Kevin Pucetas (1-2, 3.76). First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM.

Notables:

-With a groundball single to left in the first inning, Sox' outfielder Matt Miller extended his hit streak to 14 games, the team's longest of the season. Miller finished the night 2-for-4 with a run, two RBI, and a triple.

-Closing out the sixth with one-third of an inning's work, Sky Sox reliever Edgmer Escalona made just two pitches in his appearance.

-Sky Sox C/1B Paul Lo Duca was called upon to start at second base tonight, just his second appearance at the keystone in his illustrious 18-year career. His only other appearance came in 2000 with the AAA Albuquerque Dukes of the PCL.
