TODAY: The RedHawks and Omaha Royals tangle in the third of a 4-game series at Rosenblatt Stadium starting at 11:05 am. OKC snapped a 3-game losing streak last night with a 10-5 win to even the series at 1-1. The RedHawks lead the American South Division by 2 games over Albuquerque. Omaha is second, 3.5 games back of Nashville, in the American North. Lefty Michael Kirkman, riding a 17.2-inning scoreless streak, gets the start for the RedHawks. OKC has won all 5 games Kirkman has started, with him getting 3 winning decisions. Former RedHawk Luis Mendoza makes his first start against OKC as gets the nod for Omaha.
HOLLAND GETS WIN, SCHEPPERS DEBUTS: Derek Holland upped his record to 4-1 by getting the decision in last night's 10-5 OKC win. Holland went 5 innings (83 pitches) allowing a 2-run third inning, matching his earned run total from his first 5 starts. He surrendered 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 8. His ERA rose four-tenths of a run, from 0.53 to still a league-best 0.93 (see table below). Tanner Scheppers, a 2009 Texas draftee, made his Triple-A debut, entering with a 6-2 lead in the seventh. He allowed a hit and a walk in the seventh before giving up a two-out, solo homer to Scott Thorman in the eighth. The walk was Scheppers' first this season after 11 walk-free innings at Double-A Frisco.
SETTING THE PACE: OKC leads the PCL with 158 runs, 21 more than second place Albuquerque. The RedHawks are second in the PCL in home runs (27), on-base percentage (.364) and team batting (.289), while first in triples (14) and slugging (.464). The RedHawks have outscored the opposition 158-109, owning the best run differential (+49) in the league.
FROM THE MOUND: Despite having its ERA rise after each of the past 4 games, OKC's 3.33 mark remains second behind Nashville's 3.15. Derek Holland leads the PCL in ERA at 0.93, while Michael Kirkman is eighth at 2.12. Brandon McCarthy, on the DL with a stress reaction in his right shoulder, is 11th at 2.51.
CLEAN SLATE: OKC snapped a 6-game error streak yesterday. The RedHawks had amassed 11 errors in their previous 6 games, contributing to 11 unearned runs. For the season, the RedHawks are 7-8 in games with an error and 9-2 when error-free.
SALTY KEEPS HITTING: Jarrod Saltalamacchia extended his hitting streak to 11 games last night, the best by a RedHawk this year. During the streak, Saltalamacchia is 17-for-44 (.318) with 3 homers and 9 RBIs.
DE-FROSTING: Emerson Frostad extended his hitting streak to 7 games on Tuesday. During the streak, Frostad is 9-for-22 (.409) with 5 RBIs...Frostad has played in 6 straight games, twice appearing as a substitute, after appearing in only 5 of the team's first 20.
