Saltdogs Score Two in Final Frame for Walk-Off Win

LINCOLN - The Saltdogs scored two off Grand Prairie closer Jon Hunton in the bottom of the seventh, earning a 5-4 walk-off victory to avoid the series sweep at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh and final inning, Gavin Dickey and Phil Hawke drew back-to-back one-out walks before Curt Smith singled in a run to tie the game.

Hunton then intentionally walked Jorge Cortes to load the bases with one out before walking Rafael Alvarez on four pitches to give Lincoln the win.

Paul Koss pitched three scoreless innings in relief to keep the Saltdogs in the game. Garrett Sherrill (1-1) tossed a hitless seventh to pick up the victory. Hunton (6-2) allowed two runs on one hit while walking four in 1/3 of an inning, blowing the save and the suffering the loss.

Jeff Howell hit a big two-run double in the fourth inning to pull the Saltdogs to within a run. Lincoln stranded the potential tying run in scoring position three consecutive innings before mounting the game-winning rally in the seventh.

Earlier in the afternoon, Grand Prairie scored 10 of the final 12 runs to overcome a 4-0 deficit and defeat the Saltdogs 10-6 in the ballgame continued from Saturday night. Howell, Kurt Steinhauer, and Hawke all homered in a losing effort in front of 4,142 fans.

The Saltdogs are back at it Monday night at 7:05 p.m. for game one of a four-game series at Haymarket Park against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Vince Bongiovanni (1-2, 3.91) is slated to start for Lincoln. Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
