Kansas City Monarchs News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Kansas City T-Bones (38-41) were unable to keep pace with the Gary SouthShore RailCats (47-32) on Sunday afternoon as they fell, 10-6, in the rubber match of a three-game series at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, IN.
The RailCats opened their attack with three runs on four hits against Reid Santos in the first inning, scoring two on a home run by Cristian Guerrero to gain a 3-0 lead. Both teams scored a run each in the second before a two-run home run by Kala Ka'aihue pulled the T-Bones within one against Alain Quijano in the third, 4-3.
Each team added two runs in the fifth to chase the opposing starter and push Gary's advantage to 6-5. Santos was charged with six runs, five earned, on eight hits over four-plus innings. Quijano allowed five runs on eight hits over four and two-thirds frames. Neither factored into the decision.
Kansas City tied the game at six in the top of the sixth against Will Krout (5-1) on an RBI single by Jimmy Mojica. The RailCats answered immediately against T.J. Large (4-6), plating three runs in the frame to take a 9-6 lead. Large took the loss for Kansas City after surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks over one and one-thirds innings of relief.
Krout surrendered one run on five hits over three and one-thirds innings for the victory.
Drew Graham finished the sixth for Large before giving way to Martin Dewald to begin the seventh. An RBI double by Mike Massaro with one out in the inning capped the score at 10-6. Dewald added a scoreless eighth to finish the game for Kansas City.
Keanon Simon finished four-for-five and was one of four T-Bones with multiple hits in the contest. Both teams had eight of their nine batters collect at least one hit as each team pounded out 14 hits in the game. Gary's 2-3-4 hitters combined to drive in seven of their 10 runs.
The series loss was Kansas City's first against Gary since the 2009 season, a span of five series. The T-Bones went 4-0 with one split those matchups.
The T-Bones return home on Monday to open a seven-game homestand, starting with a four-game series against the Grand Prairie AirHogs. First pitch of Monday night's opener is set for 7:05.
