Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---The Captains gave up a one-run lead in the seventh inning of game one but held on to a one-run lead to win game two and split a doubleheader with Amarillo Saturday night at Fair Grounds Field. Sox catcher Josh Banda hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning of game one to lift Amarillo to a 8-6 win. Jameson Maj shutdown the Sox in the seventh to get the save and preserve Shreveport-Bossier's 4-3 game two victory.

In the second game, catcher Scott Thomas went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Reliever Lee Henry (W, 4-0) threw four innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit.

Amarillo scored first in game two. Captains starter Mark Haynes walked the bases loaded in the second inning and walked Jeremy Sauceda to put the Sox up 1-0. Alex Chavez hit into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring Matthew Tucker with the second run of the frame.

Shreveport-Bossier would tie it in the third. Thomas led off the inning with a single off Amarillo starter Travis Lawler (L, 5-4). Following a Jonathan Johnson walk, Mike Provencher tripled to tie things up at two.

The Sox would get back on top briefly when Sauceda's two-out double scored Kevin Butler. The Captains would regain the lead for good in the last of the inning behind RBI base hits from Joe Urtuzuastegui and Johnson.

Henry, Jose Velazquez and Maj combined to retire the last seven Amarillo hitters and the Sox managed just one hit in the nightcap. The win snapped a four-game Captains losing streak.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Shreveport-Bossier took a 3-0 lead in the first. Amarillo shortstop Jason White would make it 3-2 with an inside-the-park home run to dead centerfield in the third. Captains new leftfielder Chad Gabriel, who went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIS in his Shreveport-Bossier debut, knocked in Andres Rodriguez with a double in the third and scored on an Urtuzuastegui RBI base hit to make it 6-2.

But Amarillo would score six unanswered runs over the final four innings to win it. In the fifth, a two-run single by Adam de la Garza and a Lee Cruz sacrifice fly would cut the Captains lead to 6-5. In the seventh, the last inning of regulation due to the doubleheader, Cruz singled home Alex Chavez with one out to tie the game. Chavez had singled off of Hector Carrasco (L, 0-1) and took second on a balk, setting up his scoring from second on the base hit.

In the top of the eighth, Banda went deep to left with one out of Carrasco to give Amarillo the 8-6 lead.

Bryan Sabatella went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run in the first game. Johnson went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run. He reached safely in four of six plate appearances across both games of the twinbill. White was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in the opening game. Chavez went 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

With the split, the Captains are now 36-42 on the year and 8-8 against Amarillo. Shreveport-Bossier trails Grand Prairie by 13.5 in the American Association South Division and St. Paul by 8.5 in the Wild Card race with 22 games remaining.
