St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - It had an eerily similar feeling on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium, this time with the teams flipped as the St. Paul Saints avoided a sweep at the hands of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, winning the series finale by a score of 5-3 in front of 4,915 fans at Midway Stadium.
The Saints scored what turned out to be the game winning run on a bases loaded walk to catcher Alex Garabedian in the eighth inning, which is how the Goldeyes got their eventual game winning run on Saturday night.
With Aaron Cook in his second inning of relief for Winnipeg, he walked leftfielder Jason Cooper to start the eighth inning. Rightfielder Argelis Nunez was next up and he reached first on a throwing error by Winnipeg shortstop Wes Long, which pulled Luis Alen off the first base bag. After a sacrifice bunt by Richard Mercado and an intentional walk to Jonathan Van Every loaded the bases, Garabedian saw four pitches miss from Cook, which gave him the walk and gave the Saints the 4-3 lead. Steve Mays followed Garabedian with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to add an insurance and give St. Paul a 5-3 lead.
Tyler Walker picked up the victory in relief going 1.2 innings, yielding just one hit and striking out two. Walker came in relief in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and one out and got Louis Ott to ground into an inning ending double play. He then pitched around a one out single in the ninth to record his first win in a Saints uniform.
Winnipeg got on the board first in the second inning thanks to a bases loaded walk to Price Kendall to make it 1-0 in favor of the Goldeyes.
The Saints took the lead in the fourth inning with a two out RBI singles by both Jonathan Van Every and Mays. They added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Nunez.
The Goldeyes tied the ball game on a two-un home run by Luis Alen in the sixth on a controversial call by third base ump Tim McCaffery. Alen drove a ball right near the top of the left field wall, which McCaffery did not rule a home run and left fielder Jason Cooper nabbed Jon Weber at home plate as he collided with Garabedian. Then Garabedian threw to Bourquin at third to tag out Alen for what looked to be a double play. It was not to be, however, as the umpires gathered and ruled that it was a home run to tie the game at three. Saints manager George Tsamis was ejected for arguing the call.
The Saints open up a four game set against the Wichita Wingnuts starting Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Alberto Rolon (7-3, 4.72) will take the hill for the Saints and RHP Derek Blacksher (6-7. 4.32) will oppose him for Wichita. It is Year of the Bert presented by 5 Eyewitness News as we pay homage to the character Bert from the hit TV series "Sesame Street". The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
