Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---Amarillo righthander Matt Elliott (W, 8-4) threw a complete game five-hit shutout Sunday evening at Fair Grounds Field as the Sox defeated the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 1-0. Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (L, 8-4) got the tough-luck loss, allowing just one run and five hits through 6.1 innings.

Lee Cruz's sacrifice fly scored Jeremy Sauceda in the seventh inning with the game's only run. It was the second time this season Shreveport-Bossier has been defeated 1-0 and the seventh time in 24 games the Captains have been shut out.

Shreveport-Bossier's best scoring chances came in the second and fifth innings against Elliott. In both frames, they got back-to-back singles with one out. In the second, Elliott got Brian Peterson to line out to center and Alex Cowart to hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice. In the fifth, Jonathan Johnson flew out to right and Mike Provencher struck out.

DiPietro battled through some jams to keep Amarillo scoreless until the seventh. In the second, the Sox put runners on second and third with no outs. DiPietro got Josh Banda to line out to third, then struck out Kevin Butler before getting Sauceda to line out to left field to end the threat. The next inning, he struck out Tim Alberts with two-on to end the inning.

The Captains went down in order in six of nine innings on the evening. They had just one baserunner over their final four innings at the plate.

Captains relievers Jose Velazquez and Jameson Maj, both pitching in their third game in two days, held Amarillo scoreless over the final 2.2 innings. Velazquez gave up the sacrifice fly to Cruz, the first batter he faced, with the run being charged to DiPietro. In the three-game series, Velwazquez pitched four scoreless innings while Maj went 2.1 scoreless.

Sauceda went 2-for-4 in the game with the only run scored. He finished the series 4-for-10 with a run and two RBIs. For the Captains, Cowart went 2-for-3.

DiPietro was defeated for the first time in four starts against Amarillo. While he still leads the Captains in wins, the lefthander hasn't won in five starts, dating back to July 11.

The Captains were shutout for the second time at home this year. After not being shutout in their first 55 games, the Captains have now been blanked seven times in their last 24, dating back to July 10. The complete game for Elliott was his second of the year and the five hits tied a season low.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 36-43 on the season, trailing Grand Prairie by 13.5 in the South Division and St. Paul by nine for the Wild Card with 21 left to play. The Captains are off tomorrow but begin a three-game series with the Ft.
