Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA. - Fans at Scope Arena had an extra reason to cheer tonight. Along with the 2-1 shootout victory against the Royals, Ryan Salkeld-Hampton Roads native and first local to don an Admirals jersey-would score the only regulation goal for Norfolk.

Late in the first period, the Royals would make the first move when former Admiral Michael Pelech scored his first goal in a Reading uniform. Mike Marcou threw a laser from the blueline that was redirected by Pelech past Riopel at 17:07 in the first, putting Reading up, 1-0.

Midway through the second period, Ryan Salkeld tied things up,1-1, when he scored his third goal of the season but first on home ice. Devin Mantha fired a wrister at Reading netminder, Adam Morrison. The puck sneaked through Morrison's pads and slowly dribbled its way toward the goal line. As it hovered in front of the crease, Salkeld beat Morrison to the puck, and the rookie tapped it in at 9:39. This is Salkeld's 3rd goal in just five games with Norfolk.

Neither team scored through the remaining minutes of the second, and after a scoreless final 20 minutes, they headed to a three-on-three overtime period. Despite heavy pressure from both teams, no goals were tallied in the extra skate, so the teams moved on to the shootout.

Greg Chase wristed a shot past Morrison, and Reading was unable to convert on any of their three opportunities. Riopel's exceptional play pushed the Admirals to a 2-1 victory over the Royals, splitting the weekend with a formidable division rival.

Nic Riopel had another impressive night in net, earning him the second star of the game, turning away 25 of 26 Reading shots. Morrison allowed a single goal during regulation, saving 24 of Norfolk's 25 attempts, giving him the third star. The Admirals went 0-for-2 on their power play opportunities, and Reading capitalized on one of their two man-advantages.

The Admirals will be back at Scope next Friday and Saturday to host the Orlando Solar Bears for the last time this season at 7:30 p.m.

Three Stars:

1. NOR - 77 Salkeld

2. NOR - 33 Riopel

3. REA - 29 Morrison
