Quad City Mallards News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (March 19, 2016) - Austin Coldwell scored at 1:46 of overtime to give the Quad City Mallards (31-25-6) a 4-3 win over the host Fort Wayne Komets (35-20-8) Saturday night.

In the wake of their second victory in as many nights in Fort Wayne and their fourth straight win overall, the Mallards maintained their hold on eighth place and final playoff berth in the ECHL's Western Conference.

After a scoreless third period necessitated sudden death, Coldwell snapped Zach Pochiro's centering pass past Fort Wayne goaltender Pat Nagle to end the game.

The Komets, who earned one point for the overtime loss, twice battled from behind in regulation. After the Mallards emerged from the opening period with a 2-0 lead, the Komets kick-started a wild second period by scoring twice in 18 seconds to erase the deficit. Jordon Southorn, who also had an assist, wristed the first Fort Wayne goal from the blue line at 6:32 of the second. At 6:50 Jamie Schaafsma tied the game by finishing off a 3-on-2 rush from the left wing circle. Just 97 seconds after Schaafsma's equalizer Darren McMillan- who had already picked up an assist- buried a rebound to put the Mallards back on top 3-2, but Shawn Szydlowski- who had assisted on Schaafsma's goal- would deadlock the contest again on a breakaway at 13:28 of the middle frame.

The Mallards had jumped on the Komets early when Tanner Eberle scored twice in just under five minutes in the first period. Eberle rifled the opening goal from the right wing circle at 8:53 of the first. At 13:48 he doubled the lead on a breakaway. Anthony Collins lead passes sent Eberle in behind the Fort Wayne defense on both goals.

The Mallards return home to meet the Indy Fuel tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans ages 12 and under through the doors for Sunday's game will receive free Mallards youth replica jerseys courtesy of WQAD News 8.
