IceMen Beat Top Eastern Team in Toledo

March 19, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo Walleye had only loss six times at the home all season going into Saturday's matchup with the Evansville IceMen. But an early third period goal and empty netter late helped the IceMen to a 3-1 victory, their second win in three tries at Huntington Center this season.

After a slow start, the IceMen bounced back for a strong first period where they outshot the Walleye 13-12. Rookie Ryan Penny put Evansville on the board 10:49 in when he tapped in a backdoor pass from Nathan Moon off of a Toledo turnover. IceMen goalie Scott Greenham finished the period with 12 saves after he was shaken up in the opening seconds of the game on a shot that caught him in the mask.

The Walleye tied the game midway through the second period when Tyler Maxwell centered a pass from the corner to Michael Leone in the slot, and Leone ripped a shot into the top of the net. Toledo outshot Evansville 8-5 in the middle frame.

Jordan Sims shoveled a backhander past Toledo goalie Jeff Lerg 31 seconds into the third period from the edge of the crease to put Evansville in front for good. The IceMen killed off two penalties in the third period, and Tyson Fawcett added an empty net goal late to complete the 3-1 win.

Greenham stopped 25 shots for his ninth win of the season, while Lerg made 26 saves in the loss.

The IceMen finish off the weekend with a home game Sunday against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 5:15pm at the Ford Center. The first 2,500 people in the arena will receive Subway boom-boom sticks, as Sunday is another Subway Family Night.
